WHITWORTH
CUP FINAL
PLAYED AT HARROGATE TOWN - THURSDAY MAY 9th BOROUGHBRIDGE (0) 1 - RIPON CITY MAGNETS (1) 2 |
|
Ripon City
Magnets took on old rivals Boroughbridge in a competition they last
won in 1979. Influential Ripon boss Bob Hunter has moulded City into
a formidable force - they took the game to 'Bridge and were denied an
obvious penalty after five minutes when keeper Hogg tripped the lively
Simon Hutchinson. However, undeterred by this set back. City began to
flex their talents which saw Clive Peedal's superb lob clip the bar
with Hogg beaten. City's fine start was rewarded when striker Dave Sharp
latched onto a superb through ball from Peedal to drill home an unstoppable
opener which sent City's large band of supporters wild. 'Bridge responded
with their best period but City keeper Chris Sinclair was in top form
and well supported by defensive beacons Dale Smith, Lee Edmunds and
the superb Bill Headley. Half time came with City deserving their slender
lead.

Half
Time 'Bridge 0 - City 1

'Bridge started
the second half in more determined mood and were level within six minutes
when a free kick was flicked on for Les Grey to slid the ball home from
close range. However rampant City showed their character with the impressive
Simon Hutchinson coming in for some rough treatment and it was when
Hutchinson was upended once again that 'Bridge paid the price. Stuart
Lunn launched the free kick into the bridge area where the unstoppable
Dave Sharp, who had scored in every round, rose like a salmon to head
home to give City a well deserved lead. 'Bridge were now forced to play
'route one' football but the City defence held firm and some of Magnets
close football was a delight to watch. As the referee blew the final
whistle City's dream ended in reality and it seemed fitting that injured
captain 'Scouse'O.Connell, who suffered a broken leg earlier in the
season, went to lift the cup in front of City's large following.
